West End Art Project - Public Art Launch

West End Art Project - Public Art Launch
Posted September 25, 2020
Four new public art projects were unveiled today in the west end of Windsor, in the heart of Sandwich Towne.

Working in partnership with Port Windsor, three new functional art projects have been placed in Queen’s Dock by local artists.  An additional fourth public art piece is now located at the Dominion House Tavern.  Through funding provided by the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan, the new pieces include two new picnic tables and wayfinding signs coordinated by local artists and the youth arts group, Vanguard Collective.

“These beautiful, creative additions to the Sandwich area demonstrate the strong sense of community pride that exists amongst its residents,” says Bryce Phillips, CEO of Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.

“We are continually inspired by the Sandwich community and are pleased to see the funding provided through the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan enhance the area’s gathering spaces.”

Based on the input of survey takers, which highlighted their desire for a functional art project, the following pieces were created:

The piece “All My Relations” represents “the history of Sandwich Towne as diverse as my family tree and the stories they all tell,” said the artist, Jessica Rachel Cook, who was born and raised on Windsor’s West End.

The day is finally coming when we can see you again and we couldn’t be happier! As you might expect, there have been a lot of changes since we last offered onsite programs in March. We have been working with our provincial organization to align our re-opening timelines with the Seniors Active Living Centres in the rest of Ontario as well as ensuring we follow the guidance of Windsor Essex County Health Unit. Our re-opening plan was reviewed and approved by every staff member, our Pandemic Planning Committee, our Board of Directors, and was submitted to the Health Unit.

The safety of LAF Members is our top priority. The average age of our members is 70-74 years with many experiencing chronic health conditions. This places our membership in the high-risk category for COVID-19. The precautions we have in place will reflect our desire to protect high-risk individuals. As we all adjust to a new way of life, here at LAF, we want you to be aware of some new rules designed to keep everyone safe.

Find the new rules along with frequently asked questions in this link.

e hope this helps ease your return to our centres and you can soon Be Fit, Be Well and Be Social with your friends at LAF again!

NEWS RELEASE
WEST END ART PROJECT
COMMUNITY PUBLIC ART PIECE
July 21, 2020

Windsor, Ontario
There’s a new public art piece planned for Windsor’s West End being inspired by community feedback and creative submissions.

The West End Art project is a community-based art project aimed at engaging local youth and the surrounding community in the development of a representative public art project.

Through funding provided by the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan, this project aims to enhance civic pride as understood by its diverse communities, reflecting the importance of the area from the people living and working in the West End.

Utilizing social media, public surveys and a creative challenge, those who participate will be asked about their favourite places and spaces in the area, including what type of art they would like to see and what types of art challenges they have or would be willing to take part in.

“The goal of the community survey is to capture the various narratives and artistic interests of those who represent the West End,” said project coordinator, Veronica Samek from Life After Fifty.
