An important update from the LAF Board. . .
Posted July 16, 2021
Life After Fifty’s Executive Director, Joyce Nixon, has announced she will be stepping down from her role in November 2021.  Joyce has played a critical role in the development and success of the organization and we wish her the best of luck as she leaves to pursue new opportunities.  She will be greatly missed by the staff, board, volunteers and members alike.  “I have spent 16 years of my career working for Life After Fifty and the decision to leave has been very difficult.  I am proud of my accomplishments and know I am leaving the Centre in the great hands of our staff and board” said Joyce Nixon.
The Board of LAF will be undertaking a recruitment process with the intentions of identifying and having a successor in place prior to Joyce's departure to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of our organization.

OTF grant helps Life After Fifty make its auditorium more accessible

Life After Fifty works towards enriching the lives of older adults by providing opportunities to be fit, well and social. In 2019, Life After Fifty, LAF was awarded a Capital Grant of $57,900 from Ontario Trillium Foundation, OTF to support upgrades to their 635 McEwan location.

Recognizing the OTF grant, Lisa Gretzky, MPP for Windsor West stated, The work Life After Fifty does in our community is well known, vital and always deeply appreciated,” said Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky. “This generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to improve accessibility to the west-end facility will be most appreciated as the restrictions end and it reopens as a busy centre of activity for our older residents.”

The work was completed in 2020 with the goal of enhancing accessibility in the auditorium. Improvements included the addition of automatic, doors to the centre’s auditorium, as well as brighter LED lighting, a new sound system to clearly amplify voices, a stage to enhance visibility of instructors, new chairs appropriate for seated exercise classes, and a fresh coat of paint using a colour scheme chosen by LAF members, themselves.

Volunteer Appreciation Week: RECAP

Volunteer Appreciation Week: RECAP

The Town of LaSalle is celebrating volunteers in their community, and a few familiar faces were included!

Over the years Pat Jones could be found in the kitchen of Life After Fifty helping to prepare lunch for the hungry members. We miss seeing Pat and look forward to when she can be back in the centre again.

Jean Burr has contributed 20 years to Life After Fifty. She was a volunteer receptionist for a number of years and works as a Telephone Assurance Caller - making friendly calls to homebound and lonely seniors. During COVID, she continues to call seniors to have a social chat and help reduce their isolation.

Lois Curtis is a dedicated Mahjong Program Leader at Life After Fifty. She teaches new players and answers any questions.

Cody Ajersch has volunteered with Life After Fifty since he was 17, starting as a special events volunteer, helping out at fundraisers and activity days. He makes calls to home-bound seniors to have a social chat. When at the centre, he engages with seniors over a coffee. Since COVID, Cody has been committed to making calls to many seniors who are feeling isolated during lockdown.
